Welcome to the inaugural West Michigan Youth Wintersportsfest--2008. You are invited to attend one of the most spectacular weekends of amateur athletic competitions ever staged in West Michigan! If you are a student age 20 or under you are welcome to participate in any of 21 different sports competitions being held on one weekend. If you just want to watch, you are in for some diverse and spectacular viewing of many of the sports you see at the Olympics. Cheer on your local favorites or any number of young talented athletes from the Midwest and Canada. This sports festival is produced by the Muskegon Sports Council and the West Michigan Speedskating Club; two non-profits proudly serving all young athletes for over twenty years. EVENTS:
ALPINE SKI & SNOW BOARDING: These two separate competitions will be held Feb. 9, at Cannonsburg Ski Resort. The events will be run on the giant slalom course similar to NASTAR. Individual place of finish will be determined using two runs combined times. The slope will be the intermediate "blue" level. This event is not for beginner skiers or beginner showboarders! Helmets are highly recommended and all equipment must be DIN approved and meet current international safety standards. The age divisions will be 5 & under, 6-10, 11-15 and 16-18. Boys race against boys and girls against girls. Remember, Alpine ski and snowboarding are two different competitions! Medals to first three places in each division and gender. BIATHLON: This event combines cross country skiing with rifle marksmanship. The competition will be held at the Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury on Sunday, Feb. 10, 11 AM. Freestyle skiers will traverse a one kilometer course, stop and fire 5 rounds at a target, ski another 1K loop and fire again, then ski another kilometer and fire five more rounds. Misses result in a one minute penalty. Air rifles will be provided. Bring your own skis or rentals available. Race director is Butch DeLong: butchdelong@msn.com
BOWLING: Indoor fun at one of the greatest of all American pastimes; bowling--where every frame has the potential to make you jump for joy--or break your heart, and where every new game gives you a shot at redemption. Northway Lanes is the site of the competition on Feb. 9, starting at 1 PM. There will be four age divisions, 6-8, 9-11, 12-14, 15-18, with awards for the top 4 bowlers male and female. There will be three qualifying games in an age bracket. The top four qualifiers are seeded and will roll one game match play with each winner advancing to a one game play finals. COMPETITIVE CHEERLEADING: Competitive All Star Cheerleading Competition is for teams and individuals. Teams Youth, Senior levels 1-4. All USASF rules and regulations apply for this non-sanctioned event. Competition is held at Gonyons Gym, 622 Chatterson Rd. on Saturday, February 9th, starting at 4 PM. Competion floor is a 42 x 42 spring floor. Warm up areas provided. Individual competitions will be held after team competitions. Individuals may compete in jumps, tumbling, and/or stunt groups. Check in times TBA. Each participant will receive a t-shirt, participation medal and goodie bag. Teams will receive medallions and coaches gifts. CROSS COUNTRY SKI: This is a double event held Feb. 9, in the morning at 9 AM for classic style 5K skiing at Pigeon Creek ski area and a 5 PM 5K freestyle event at Muskegon State Park. Enter one competition or both with special combined events awards for those that elect to do both events! Four age divisions: Class I--19-20, Class II--17-18, Class III--5-16, Class IV--13-14. Rental skis available. Join us for one of the most unique cross country ski adventures in the Midwest with a morning ski at one gorgeous location and a night ski at one of the finest winter sports facilities in the United States. DISC GOLF: One of the fastest growing sports these days is disc golf. Enjoy spectacular Whitehall Township Disc Golf Course in the snow for an even greater challenge on Feb. 9, at 1 PM. FIGURE SKATING: The "Parade Of Champions" figure skating show is an exhibition and not a competition! It is hosted by the Muskegon Lakeshore Figure Skating Club at Lakeshore Sports Centre (4470 Airline Road , Muskegon 49444), Saturday night, February 9, at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $7 with children 5 and under free. (Wintersportsfest competitors from other sports receive a $2 discount.) Solos, duets, group numbers and ice dancing will be a part of the show featuring the members and friends of the Lakeshore FSC. If you would like to participate in the exhibiition, you may do so! Here are two methods for non-club members to participate. Skaters in the "Never-ever," basic skills, intro hockey as well as those competitive figure skaters that want to be in the show can do so by registering with the Muskegon Lakeshore Figure Skating Club's Basic Skills lessons, Session #3. In addition to six weeks of lessons, you will be permitted to skate in the exhibition with your class...ages are 3 and up. The sessions are Sundays 4:15-5:05 starting Jan. 6. For competitive skaters that belong to other clubs, you too may participate in the exhibition by getting in touch with the Lakeshore FSC (member USFS). GYMNASTICS: Competition is open to all children at gymnastics levels 1--pre 5 non-sanctioned, also women's Prep-Opt non-sanctioned. All USAG rules and regulations apply for this event. The meet will be held Saturday, Feb. 9, starting at 9 AM. All contestants receive a t-shirt, a participation medal and a goodie bag. Teams will receive a medallian and coaches gifts. ICE SPEEDSKATING: This is a series of four races of various distances on the gorgeous outdoor rink in Muskegon State Park on Friday night at 5 PM. INLINE SPEEDSKATING: Kentwood Fun Spot is the venue in Kentwood, Mi. Doors open at 6:00 AM with racing at 7:00 AM in several divisions. There are 4 Novice divisions ages 10-17, 7 Elite divisions from Tiny Tot (5 & under) through Junior ages 16 & 17. There are two distances in each age division from 100 to 1,000m. There will be two person mixed relays with 4 divisions. This is going to be an awesome meet with many entrants from across the Midwest, so sign up early to insure a place in the competition! LUGE: Muskegon State Park (home course for four time Olympian Mark Grimmette) is the site of one of the most thrilling events in Wintersportsfest. The competition will be run Sunday afternoon at 2:30 PM. This is singles competition divided by age and gender. First time luge athletes are welcome to compete. You must first attend a safety clinic. Sleds, helmet and expert instruction available. Parental permission and proof of health insurance is mandatory. Everyone will have practice runs before your timed runs begin. There will be a special free training session on Friday night for first time luge athletes that want to try out the sport for the first time. There will be four age divisions: YOUTH A--15-18, YOUTH B--13-14, YOUTH C--11-12 AND YOUTH D--AGE 10 AND UNDER. Medals to the top three finishers; male and female division. ORIENTEERING: The cerebral sport that combines rugged physical fitness with brain power for those that like an outdoor winter adventure. This sport is not for the faint of heart. Participants in 4 age divisions 7 & under, 8-11, 12-15 and 16-18 will be given just a map, passport, clue sheet and compass. The course is in a remote location at Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury. Use your map and compass to find as many control markers as possible in this wilderness area. Parents or guardians are allowed to accompany the athletes so they do not become lost or injured but they may not assist in navigating the course or help to locate markers. The athlete must make all the decisions on their own by reading the maps and compass to determine directions. The athlete who achieves the most control markers in the shortest amount of time wins. You have a maximum time limit of three hours to look for markers and return to the home base. To qualify for a medal you must achieve at least three control markers at the check points. SLED DOG RACING: Dogsledding has a rich history here in Michigan; from mail delivery, kid and mutt races in the UP in the early 1900's to organized racing that began in the '60's. Today, there are sled dog races every winter weekend beginning in January including sprint (short and fast), mid-distance (20-100 miles), the UP--200, and Iditarod qualifying race. Junior mushers usually compete in their own class at races, supported by their families and race giving organizations. If you have never seen a sled dog race in person, come to beautiful Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury (just north of Muskegon/Whitehall), to see some great racing on Feb. 9 at 1 PM and 2:30 PM Contact: Gail Zemmol at: fun@doublejj.com
SNOWSHOE RACING: Snowshoe racing through the beautiful woods at Muskegon State Park on Sunday, Feb. 10, starting at 2:30 PM. Multiple age divisions divided by gender and a special parent/child team race (awards only for the child). The course is 2.5K. A limited number of rental snowshoes are available. If you have never been on snowshoes before, this is your opportunity to try out a new sport in the novice division and have a blast in the beautiful State Park along the shores of Lake Michigan. SWIMMING: The spectacular Grand Haven Aquatic Center at the high school is the site of the swim competition Saturday morning Feb. 9, at 10 AM. Age 8 and under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-18 will compete at various distances. Awards for top three finishers in each single distance event with boys divisions and girls divisions. TABLE TENNIS: Ross Park Elementary School in Norton Shores will host the competition on Feb. 9, starting at 10 AM. There will be four events. They will include boys and girls singles events in age groups 12-15 and 16-18. United States Table Tennis rules apply. All games are singles matches. The best three of five games wins the match. This will be a round robin format in each event. The competition is sponsored by the Muskegon Table Tennis Club. Meet director is Gary Shedd: gary@garyshedd.com
TARGET SHOOTING: The Twin Lake Gun Club is the site of this twin competition. Four age divisions of youngsters (10-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-18) will be able to compete in trap shooting and/or .22 rifle target shooting competitions Feb. 9, starting at 11 AM, with registration and check in from 10-11 AM. The .22 rifle competiton will consist of three rounds of 10 shots at stationary targets at 25, 50 and 75 yards. You must bring your own hearing and eye protection or you will not be permitted to compete! NRA rules apply. ***NOTE: All contestants must use provided firearms (bolt action .22 with open sights) and gun club furnished ammo. No outside ammunition is allowed! The second competition is trap shooting. This is another competion entirely, requiring a separate registration and separate entry fee. Same age divisions as .22 target shooting. All ATA rules apply. There will be two rounds of standard 25 shots for a combined possible total score of 50. Hearing and eye protection is mandatory and you must provide your own shotgun (either 12 or 20 gauge). TENNIS: Norton Pines Athletic Club indoor tennis courts in Spring Lake will be the site of this doubles competition beginning Friday, Feb. 8 at 6 PM. Competitors will need to be prepared to play all day Saturday and Sunday morning. Players will compete in three divisions; 18, 14 and 10 and under. Everyone is guaranteed at least two matches!
